Grow a Beautiful Gourmet Mushroom with Rich Flavor

Cultivate Chestnut mushrooms with our premium Grospore 10ml (10cc) liquid culture syringe. Known for their attractive chestnut-brown caps, firm texture, and rich, slightly nutty flavor, Chestnut mushrooms are a favorite among gourmet growers and culinary enthusiasts. The species is Pholiota adiposa, and it is also sold as cinnamon cap or fat pholiota.

Their dense clusters and distinctive appearance make them an excellent choice for anyone looking to expand their collection with a visually striking and flavorful mushroom variety.

Which “Chestnut Mushroom” Is This?

“Chestnut mushroom” means three different things depending on where you shop, so here is exactly what you are getting. This culture is Pholiota adiposa, the chestnut mushroom of US cultivation, also called cinnamon cap. It is not the brown Agaricus bisporus sold as “chestnut mushroom” in UK and European supermarkets — that is cremini, crimini, baby bella or Swiss brown. It is also not Cyclocybe aegerita, which is sometimes called chestnut but which we sell separately as Black Poplar / Pioppino.

Why Choose Chestnut / Cinnamon Cap Mushrooms?

  • Beautiful Chestnut-Brown Caps – Produces attractive clusters with warm brown coloration and a naturally textured appearance.
  • Rich, Nutty Flavor – Chestnut mushrooms offer a savory, slightly nutty taste that adds depth to a wide range of dishes.
  • Firm, Meaty Texture – Their sturdy stems and tender caps hold up well during cooking.
  • Excellent Culinary Versatility – Ideal for sautéing, roasting, soups, pasta, stir-fries, risotto, and other gourmet recipes.
  • Rewarding to Cultivate – A distinctive variety for growers looking to explore mushrooms beyond traditional Oyster varieties.

Lab-Tested Liquid Culture for Reliable Growth

Our Grospore Chestnut / Cinnamon Cap Liquid Culture Syringe contains vigorous living mycelium, lab-tested and prepared in our ISO-certified cleanroom to support healthy colonization and dependable cultivation performance.

Each 10ml (10cc) syringe offers:

  • Live Mycelium, Not Spores – This is a liquid culture (LC) syringe, not a spore syringe. There is no germination step, so colonization begins as soon as you inoculate.
  • Lab-Tested & ISO Cleanroom Prepared – Every batch is lab-tested for purity and prepared in an ISO-certified cleanroom, so what reaches you is clean, contaminant-free and viable.
  • Faster Colonization – Active mycelium helps promote efficient colonization compared with starting from spores.
  • Convenient 10ml (10cc) Syringe – 10cc and 10ml are the same volume. Easy to use with appropriately prepared sterile growing media, grain spawn or agar.
  • Verified Genetics – Cloned, isolated Pholiota adiposa mycelium — correctly identified, not a mislabelled substitute.

How to Grow Chestnut / Cinnamon Cap Mushrooms

  1. Prepare the Substrate – Hardwood sawdust-based substrates and other appropriately prepared hardwood materials are commonly used for Chestnut mushroom cultivation. The same syringe can also be used to inoculate sterilized grain spawn, grain jars or bags, or an agar plate.
  2. Inoculate – Inject 2–3cc (2–3ml) per grain jar or bag through a self-healing injection port, using sterile technique in a still air box or in front of a laminar flow hood.
  3. Colonize – Allow the mycelium to fully colonize the substrate under suitable incubation conditions.
  4. Initiate Fruiting – Once fully colonized, provide appropriate humidity, fresh-air exchange, indirect light, and suitable fruiting temperatures.
  5. Harvest & Enjoy – Harvest clusters while the caps are firm and well developed for the best texture and culinary quality.

Refrigerate your liquid culture syringe on arrival. Stored at 35–45°F (2–7°C), upright and out of direct light, it stays viable for 4–6 months. Orders ship fast from Oregon in discreet packaging, with tracking on every order and a 30-day return policy on unused items.

  1. Faridah Okonkwo

Tried this one specifically because I wanted a true Pholiota and not one of the other mushrooms sold under the same common name. The culture looked clean, took to grain without drama, and the growth was steady. Fruited it on hardwood and got dense little clusters with nice brown caps. Flavor was pleasantly nutty and held up well in a pan sauce. I would buy this again for small gourmet runs.

  2. Marlon

Got this for my brother after his last chestnut try stalled. He says this one took off.

  3. Wyatt G.

Tracked this pretty closely on two grain jars. I used 2.5cc per jar, shook at roughly 30 percent, and both recovered fast with ropey, even growth rather than patchy wisps. No off colors, no sour smell, no obvious slowdown points. Spawn run finished a bit sooner than my notes from pioppino, and the final clusters came in dense with firm stems and small chestnut caps. For me, the results were exactly what I wanted.

As a first-timer, I worried for nothing. It shipped fast and arrived sooner than expected.

At first I assumed support would give me a canned reply about storage and injection amounts. Instead, they answered both questions clearly and without attitude. That alone made me feel better about ordering, and the guidance turned out to be accurate.

  7. C.P.

I expected the instructions to be the usual vague stuff that assumes you already know everything. Instead, they were actually specific enough to use without hunting through forums for missing steps. The storage range, how much to inject per jar, and the note about sterile technique were laid out clearly. I still double-checked a few things at first, but once I started, the process felt a lot more straightforward than I expected.

As someone brand new to liquid culture, I was honestly worried I would waste money by messing it up. That made me compare prices a lot before ordering this one. It was not the cheapest option I saw, but the 10cc size felt reasonable for a first run because I could inoculate more than one jar without buying extras right away. The culture looked healthy, and that gave me some confidence that I was not paying for a gamble. I used a few cc across grain jars and saw steady growth, which made the cost feel easier to justify. For a beginner, value is not just the sticker price, it is whether the product gives you a fair chance to succeed. This one did, and I would buy it again.

  10. Neil P.

After years buying cultures, this chestnut ran cleaner than my previous cinnamon cap attempt.

  11. Lyle, VT

Picked this up as a gift for my brother, who is much more into cultivation than I am, so the first thing I judged was how it was packed. I wanted it to arrive looking careful and gift-worthy, not like something tossed in a box. The syringe was secured well, the cap was tight, and everything looked clean and organized when he opened it. Nothing leaked, nothing rattled around, and the label was easy to read without squinting. I also appreciated that the packaging felt discreet, since I was sending it straight to his house and did not want anything confusing printed all over the outside. He immediately commented that it looked professionally packed and properly protected for transit. As someone buying for another person, that mattered a lot. It made the gift feel thoughtful instead of risky.

  12. Lena P.

First run with this species and the instructions were easy to follow. I used part of the syringe on sterilized grain, saw steady growth, and moved the rest to agar just to check it. Both looked healthy. I also liked that 10ml actually goes a decent way when you are only using a couple cc at a time.

  13. Anonymous

For me, value on a liquid culture comes down to usable volume, cleanliness, and whether it saves time. This syringe checked those boxes. The 10cc size was enough to inoculate multiple grain jars without stretching it too thin, and because it is live culture rather than spores, I was able to get growth moving right away instead of waiting through another step. That matters when you are comparing cost against effort. I also liked that this is clearly identified as Pholiota adiposa, since the chestnut name gets used loosely and I did not want to pay for the wrong thing. It is not the cheapest option I have seen, but for a clean, correctly labeled culture that colonized well and gave me several uses from one syringe, the price felt justified.

  14. Ines Calderón

Sent this to my brother. Packaging looked tidy and secure, and nothing leaked or rattled in the box.

  15. Oumar Ndiaye

I reordered because the first syringe did what it was supposed to do, and that is basically my whole standard. Clean growth, no drama, no mystery sludge. When I need more, I buy more. Simple.
