Description
Brown Beech / Buna Shimeji (Hypsizygus tessellatus) Liquid Culture Syringe – 10ml / 10cc
Grow a Delicate Gourmet Mushroom with Exceptional Texture
Cultivate Brown Beech mushrooms with our premium Grospore 10ml (10cc) liquid culture syringe. Also known as Brown Shimeji, buna shimeji, beech mushroom, brown clamshell or seafood mushroom, these gourmet mushrooms are recognized for their small brown caps, slender pale stems, firm texture, and rich, nutty flavor.
The species appears in catalogues as Hypsizygus tessellatus, Hypsizygus tessulatus and Hypsizygus marmoreus — all the same mushroom. Brown Beech mushrooms are especially popular in Asian-inspired cuisine and are valued by growers and chefs for their attractive clustered growth, excellent cooking texture, and distinctive savory taste.
Brown Beech, Not True Hon-Shimeji — and Not the White Variety
“Shimeji” is an umbrella term covering several unrelated mushrooms, so it is worth being precise. This culture is Hypsizygus tessellatus, the cultivable brown beech mushroom. It is not Lyophyllum shimeji, the true hon-shimeji, which is mycorrhizal and cannot be grown from liquid culture at all — retail packs labelled “hon shimeji” are almost always this species. It is also not the white bunapi / alba clamshell variety, which is a separate cultivar.
Why Choose Brown Beech / Buna Shimeji Mushrooms?
- Distinctive Brown Caps – Produces compact clusters of small caramel-brown caps with slender cream-colored stems.
- Rich, Nutty Flavor – Offers a savory, slightly nutty taste that becomes especially enjoyable when cooked.
- Firm, Crisp Texture – Brown Beech mushrooms maintain a satisfying bite and hold up well in a wide variety of dishes.
- Gourmet Culinary Favorite – Excellent for stir-fries, soups, noodle dishes, hot pots, rice bowls, pasta, and sautéed recipes.
- Unique Cluster Formation – Their dense, elegant clusters make Brown Beech mushrooms both visually appealing and rewarding to cultivate.
Lab-Tested Liquid Culture for Reliable Growth
Our Grospore Brown Beech / Buna Shimeji Liquid Culture Syringe contains vigorous living mycelium, lab-tested and prepared in our ISO-certified cleanroom to support healthy colonization and dependable cultivation performance.
Each 10ml (10cc) syringe offers:
- Live Mycelium, Not Spores – This is a liquid culture (LC) syringe, not a spore syringe. There is no germination step, so colonization begins as soon as you inoculate.
- Lab-Tested & ISO Cleanroom Prepared – Every batch is lab-tested for purity and prepared in an ISO-certified cleanroom, so what reaches you is clean, contaminant-free and viable.
- Faster Colonization – Active mycelium helps promote efficient colonization compared with starting from spores.
- Convenient 10ml (10cc) Syringe – 10cc and 10ml are the same volume. Easy to use with appropriately prepared sterile growing media, grain spawn or agar.
- Verified Genetics – Cloned, isolated Hypsizygus tessellatus mycelium — correctly identified brown beech, not a mislabelled shimeji.
How to Grow Brown Beech / Buna Shimeji Mushrooms
- Prepare the Substrate – Hardwood sawdust-based substrates supplemented with suitable nutrients are commonly used for Brown Beech cultivation. The same syringe can also be used to inoculate sterilized grain spawn, grain jars or bags, or an agar plate.
- Inoculate – Inject 2–3cc (2–3ml) per grain jar or bag through a self-healing injection port, using sterile technique in a still air box or in front of a laminar flow hood.
- Colonize – Allow the mycelium to fully colonize the substrate under suitable incubation conditions.
- Initiate Fruiting – Once fully colonized, provide appropriate humidity, fresh-air exchange, indirect light, and suitable cooler fruiting temperatures.
- Harvest & Enjoy – Harvest clusters when the caps are well formed and the stems remain firm for the best texture and culinary quality.

Compared with my previous brown beech attempt from another supplier, this syringe was more consistent. That one colonized unevenly and one jar stalled early. With this, both grain jars started clean and filled in at about the same pace. I moved them to supplemented sawdust after that and the transfer took without issues. Not the fastest culture I have used, but it was steady and predictable, which mattered more for this variety.

Ordered late, expected the usual limbo, and it showed up fast with tracking that actually updated. Cold on arrival, packed sensibly, no drama. That is all I wanted and, for once, that is what happened.

I was nervous, but the instructions were clear enough that I didn’t second-guess everything.

Compared with my previous brown shimeji attempt from another supplier, this syringe was noticeably more consistent. The last one had sparse visible strands and stalled on one of three grain jars at roughly the 40 percent mark. This culture showed evenly suspended mycelium after a gentle swirl, inoculated cleanly, and all three jars moved at a similar pace. Not miraculous, just much more uniform, which matters when you are trying to diagnose technique instead of genetics.

I bought this mainly because the listing finally explained the shimeji naming without making it more confusing. As a newer grower, that mattered a lot. I put a small amount to agar first, then expanded from there, and everything looked consistent and clean. Knocked off one star only because this variety seems slower and a bit more particular than the easy stuff, but the culture itself was solid.

Before ordering, I sent customer service a fairly nitpicky message with three separate questions: whether this was the actual brown beech strain and not white bunapi, whether 10cc and 10ml were being used interchangeably, and what storage range they recommend if I was not inoculating immediately. I expected a broad canned reply. Instead I got a precise answer that addressed each point in order, including the species naming issue and the refrigeration range. That mattered to me because listings for shimeji are often sloppy. The response came back quickly, but more important, it was specific enough that I did not have to write again for clarification. The syringe itself looked clean on arrival, but the main reason I would buy here again is that support clearly knew what they were talking about.

What I tracked most was storage behavior. I refrigerated it upright at about 39F, kept it in the original sleeve, and waited just under seven weeks before using it. The liquid stayed evenly translucent with visible mycelial strands and no odd sediment ring at the plunger end. When I finally inoculated grain, it still looked vigorous. For anyone who does not use cultures immediately, the shelf life here felt honestly accurate.

Pulled this out of the mailbox and right away the packaging felt dialed in. Nothing fancy just for show, just smart. The syringe was capped tight, needle packed separately, and everything stayed put instead of rattling around like junk in a drawer. I also liked that it was bagged cleanly and cushioned enough that I did not have to wonder if the plunger got bumped during transit. Cold pack was still doing its thing when it landed, which was a nice bonus. Little stuff matters with liquid culture, and this setup looked like somebody actually thought through the trip from warehouse to doorstep. Whole order gave off a legit, no-nonsense vibe. If packaging is your make-or-break thing, this one is solid and not sketchy at all.

After my last shimeji stalled, this one actually took off cleanly.

Used this to start a couple grain jars after a failed attempt with another vendor’s shimeji culture. Big difference here. The syringe had visible mycelium, the jars took off evenly, and I appreciated that the labeling made it clear this was the brown beech type and not the white variety. Not an instant species by any means, but it looked clean and did what I needed.

For the money, this felt pretty legit. You get a full syringe, the culture looked healthy, and I did not feel like I was paying boutique prices for something basic. Solid buy if you want to try brown beech.

Before ordering, I asked customer service whether this was the cultivable brown beech and not true hon-shimeji. They replied clearly, explained the naming issue, and confirmed storage details too. That gave me enough confidence to place the order.
