Black Poplar / Pioppino (Cyclocybe aegerita) Liquid Culture Syringe – 10ml / 10cc
Grow a Rich, Gourmet Mushroom with Exceptional Flavor
Cultivate Black Poplar mushrooms with our premium Grospore 10ml (10cc) liquid culture syringe. Also known as Pioppino mushrooms, Black Poplar mushrooms are prized for their attractive brown caps, slender stems, firm texture, and rich, earthy flavor.
You will find this mushroom listed as Black Poplar, Pioppino, Pioppini, Velvet Pioppini, poplar fieldcap, yanagi matsutake in Japan and tea tree mushroom (cha shu gu) in Chinese markets. Taxonomically it appears as both Cyclocybe aegerita and Agrocybe aegerita — the same species under a current and a former genus. Popular in gourmet cooking, it is an excellent choice for home cultivators looking to expand their collection with a flavorful and visually appealing species.

Lab-Tested Liquid Culture for Reliable Growth
Our Grospore Black Poplar / Pioppino Liquid Culture Syringe contains vigorous living mycelium, lab-tested and prepared in our ISO-certified cleanroom to support healthy colonization and dependable cultivation performance.
Each 10ml (10cc) syringe offers:
- Live Mycelium, Not Spores – This is a liquid culture (LC) syringe, not a spore syringe. There is no germination step, so colonization begins as soon as you inoculate.
- Lab-Tested & ISO Cleanroom Prepared – Every batch is lab-tested for purity and prepared in an ISO-certified cleanroom, so what reaches you is clean, contaminant-free and viable.
- Faster Colonization – Active mycelium helps promote efficient colonization compared with starting from spores.
- Convenient 10ml (10cc) Syringe – 10cc and 10ml are the same volume. Easy to use with appropriately prepared sterile growing media, grain spawn or agar.
- Consistent Genetics – Cloned, isolated Cyclocybe aegerita mycelium for reliable cluster formation and dependable performance.
How to Grow Black Poplar / Pioppino Mushrooms
- Prepare the Substrate – Hardwood sawdust-based substrates and other properly prepared hardwood materials are commonly used for Black Poplar cultivation. The same syringe can also be used to inoculate sterilized grain spawn, grain jars or bags, or an agar plate.
- Inoculate – Inject 2–3cc (2–3ml) per grain jar or bag through a self-healing injection port, using sterile technique in a still air box or in front of a laminar flow hood.
- Colonize – Allow the mycelium to fully colonize the substrate under suitable incubation conditions.
- Initiate Fruiting – Once fully colonized, provide appropriate humidity, fresh-air exchange, indirect light, and suitable fruiting temperatures.
- Harvest & Enjoy – Harvest clusters while the caps are firm and well developed for the best texture and culinary quality.

Picked this up for my brother after his earlier pioppino try from another seller barely colonized and then fizzled out. I did not run this one myself, but he kept me updated because it was a gift. According to him, this syringe looked cleaner, spread faster on grain, and gave him a much more even start than the last attempt. Based on that comparison alone, I would absolutely buy it for him again.

Sat in my fridge for months, unlike leftovers, and still looked ready to work.

Support answered my storage question fast. Super chill, actually helpful, no copy-paste vibes.

Used this for a small side run on two hardwood grain jars before committing more substrate. Both took off cleanly and evenly. Nice to see pioppino behave like a professional instead of like my last chaotic science project.

This actually produced clean, quick growth. Frankly rude to my other jars.

Since my first attempt with another pioppino culture stalled out, I gave this one a shot on agar before committing to grain. It grew evenly, transferred cleanly, and saved me a lot of time versus troubleshooting a weak start. Ended up being a better value than the cheaper syringe I bought before because I actually used the whole run instead of tossing half my prep.

I figured keeping liquid culture in the fridge for over a month was asking for disappointment, so I almost used this immediately. Glad I waited. Stored it upright around 39 to 40 degrees, out of the light, and it still looked healthy when I finally inoculated. Growth started clean and steady. I was doubtful about the shelf life claims, but in my case they turned out to be pretty accurate.

Wanted something besides oysters, so I tried this culture on sterilized grain and then moved it to hardwood sawdust blocks. It took off cleanly and the clusters came in dense with sturdy stems. Flavor was great in pasta, kind of savory and nutty. I also appreciated that the syringe was easy to draw from without clogging. Would buy again for a gourmet grow.

Last pioppino culture I tried from another seller dragged forever, then threw contamination before the jar was halfway done. This one was simply better. The liquid looked clean, it moved through the syringe fine, and my grain showed healthy growth much sooner. Not magic, just competent. I am knocking off one star because the first attempt elsewhere wasted my time and made me suspicious of everything, but this batch actually performed.

For one narrow project, I wanted to run pioppino on two small hardwood sawdust bags for a cool corner in my basement, mostly to see if it was worth adding to my regular rotation. I was doubtful right away because previous gourmet cultures I tried for side experiments looked fine and then stalled out. This one surprised me. I used about 2.5cc per bag with careful sterile technique, and both bags showed steady, even growth instead of that patchy stop-and-go nonsense I was bracing for. What won me over was how consistent it stayed through colonization. I still would not call pioppino the easiest species for a casual setup, but for this specific basement hardwood test, the culture did its part cleanly and gave me enough confidence to run a larger batch next time.

Refrigerated it for five weeks before use. Still looked clean and started without any issues.

Used it for a small hardwood side run. Stayed clean, took off fast, did the job.

Sent support a question about using this on grain first and got a clear reply the same day. They also confirmed storage temp without fluff. That kind of straightforward help makes a difference.
